Dining Hall Complex
Tungal Educational Trust
The design organizes four dining spaces across four levels, allowing them to function not only as dining areas but also as flexible venues for exhibitions, gatherings, and other student activities. All levels remain visually interconnected, unified beneath a large over-arching roof conceived as a protective “firmament” that brings the entire space together spatially and symbolically. The largely open configuration, with minimal internal walls, enables uninterrupted air movement beneath the high roof, enhancing natural ventilation and passive cooling.
Located just outside the town of Jamkhandi, this campus for the Tungal Educational Trust envisions a high school and pre-university (+2) institution for over 1,500 students. Jamkhandi, a town with a population of approximately 200,000, was historically the seat of a princely state during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The site is presently bordered by shrub forests and agricultural lands on two sides, establishing a largely open and semi-rural setting. The region experiences a hot, dry climate, with summer temperatures reaching up to 45°C, strong winds of up to 42 km/h, and limited but occasionally intense seasonal rainfall, including periods of heavy downpour. A trapezoid shaped portion of the site served to locate the dining halls with two sides under shrub forests.
